Definition:
An injury to the tarsal metatarsal ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture. "Lisfranc" joint complex.

Symptoms
  • Pain in the foot
  • Swelling in the foot
  • Point tender to the tarsometatarsal ligament
  • Unable to stand on tip toe
  • Loss of ROM
Causes
  • Axial load sustained with foot plantarflexed and slightly rotated
  • High-energy trauma
  • Fall
  • Motor vehicle accident
Treatment
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Gait program
