Fractured Clavicle

Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the clavicle.

Symptoms
  • Pain in the front part of the upper chest
  • Swelling
  • Fracture can be felt through the skin
  • Sharp pain when any movement is made
  • Referred pain: dull to extreme ache in and around clavicle area, including surrounding muscles.
  • Possible nausea, dizziness, and/or spotty vision due to extreme pain
Causes
  • Fall on outstretched hand
  • Fall onto shoulder
  • Direct blow
Treatment
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Shoulder stabilization exercises
  • Upper extremity strengthening
