S/P Total Shoulder Replacement
Definition:
Total shoulder joint replacement is an option given to patients who suffer from joint dysfunction. This is usually the result of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, but more rarely for those who have sustained severe trauma from a shoulder fracture. Generally, all other modes of treatment are considered first, such as physical therapy and medication, but total shoulder replacement can provide pain relief and increased mobility for those who have not experienced relief. The primary goal of total shoulder replacement surgery is to alleviate pain with secondary goals of improving motion, strength and function.
Symptoms- Pain in the shoulder
- Pain with movements of the shoulder
- Loss of ROM of the shoulder
- Clicking and locking of the shoulder
- Weakness in the shoulder
Causes- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Shoulder fracture
- Osteoarthritis
- Post traumatic arhtritis
- Avascular necrosis
Treatment- Period of immobilization in a sling x 3-4 weeks
- Avoid shoulder hyperextension x 6-8 weeks
- Passive ROM, then progress to active ROM
- Maintain elbow and wrist ROM
- Posture program
- Shoulder stabilization exercises
- Upper extremity shoulder strengthening
