Osgood Shlatter

Definition:
Inflammation or partial avulsion of the tibial apophysis due to traction forces.

Symptoms
  • Painful lumps just below the knee
  • Most often seen in young adolescents
  • Intense knee pain worse during activities such as running, jumping, squatting, and especially ascending or descending stairs and during kneeling
Causes
  • Excess weight
  • Overzealous conditioning (running and jumping)
  • Adolescent bone growth
Treatment
  • ROM and stretching
  • Knee stabilization exercises
  • Gait program
  • Lower extremity strengthening
