Lumbar Spondylolithesis

Definition:
Anterior or posterior displacement of a vertebra or the vertebral column in relation to the vertebrae below. The variant "listhesis," resulting from misdivision of this compound word, is sometimes applied in conjunction with scoliosis

Symptoms
  • Low back stiffness
  • Tightness in hamstrings
  • Intermittent shocks of shooting pain beginning in the buttock traveling downward into the back of the thigh and/or lower leg
  • Coughing and sneezing can intensify the pain
  • Tingling and numbness into lower extremity
Causes
  • Spondylosis
  • Common among athletes who participate in sports with repeated hyperextension, such as gymnastics, ballet, and American football
  • Genetic component
