Fracture of the Head of the Radius

Definition:
A break, especially the breaking of a bone or cartilage in the head of the radius.

Symptoms
  • Pain on the outside of the elbow
  • Swelling in the elbow joint
  • Difficulty in bending or straightening the elbow accompanied by pain
  • Inability or difficulty in turning the forearm
Causes
  • Fall on an ourstretched hand
  • Direct blow
Treatment
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
  • Possible surgical intervention
