Dislocated Toe

Definition:
Displacement of the toe; specifically disturbance or disarrangement of the normal relation of the bones entering into the formation of a joint.

Symptoms
  • Pain in the toe
  • Swelling in the toe
  • Loss of ROM in the toe
  • Possible deformity in toe
Causes
  • Walking on uneven terrain
  • Overloading pressure on one portion of the foot or direct trauma to the toe
  • Heavy object falling on toe
  • Stubbing toe
Treatment
  • Period of immobilization (buddy taping)
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening
