Definition:
An injury to the tibiofibular ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture. "High ankle sprain"

Symptoms
  • Pain in the lower leg/upper ankle
  • Swelling in the ankle
  • Point tender on the tibiofibular ligament
  • Loss of ROM in the ankle
Causes
  • Excessive rotation of the ankle (adduction or abduction of the foot)
  • Extremes of dorsiflexion
  • Combinations of dorsiflexion with adduction or abduction
Treatment
  • ROM and stretching
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Balance training
  • Gait program
