Sprains of the Calcaneofibilar Ligament

Definition:
An injury to the calcaneofibular ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.

Symptoms
  • Pain is primarily located on the lateral side of the ankle joint
  • Ankle swelling
  • Bruising on the lateral ankle
  • Presence of joint instability
  • Audible pop or crack heard at the time of the injury
  • Possible inability to bear weight on the affected ankle
Causes
  • Forceful ankle inversion with foot in neutral position
  • Tripping or falling
  • Landing awkwardly after a jump
  • Walking or running on uneven surfaces
  • A sudden impact such as a car crash
  • Twisting or rotating the ankle
  • Rolling the ankle
Treatment
  • Massage to reduce swelling
  • ROM and stretching
  • Ankle stabilization exercises
  • Balance training
  • Lower extremity strengthening
