Sprain and Strain of the Coccyx

Definition:
An injury to the coccyx when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dilocation or fracture; an injury resulting from tensile force

Symptoms
  • Pain in the buttocks
  • Pain worse after sitting
  • Sharp pain when moving from sitting to standing
Causes
  • An unstable coccyx which causes chronic inflammation
  • A fall or direct trauma to the base of the spine
  • Repetitive strain or overuse, particularly from cycling or rowing
  • Muscle spasm or tightness in the pelvic floor muscles, gluteus maximus, prirformis or adductor magnus muscles
  • Problems following surgery
