Ganglion Cyst (Wrist/Hand)

Definition:
A non-neoplastic soft tissue tumor that may occur in any joint, but most often occurs on or around joints and tendons in the hands or feet. Also known as a Bible cyst or Bible bump.

Symptoms
  • Swelling that often appears on or around joints and tendons in the hand or foot
  • Visible and palpable bump
  • Pain in the hand or foot
  • Loss of ROM in the hand or foot
Causes
  • Out-pouching or distention of a weakened portion of a joint capsule or tendon sheath
Treatment
  • Period of immobilization
  • Progress to ROM and stretching exercises
  • Hand intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Upper extremity strengthening
