Dupuytrens Contracture

Definition:
A disease of the palmar fascia resulting in thickening and shortening of fibrous bands on the palmar surface of the hand and fingers resulting in characteristic flexion deformity of the fourth and fifth digits.

Symptoms
  • Can not fully extend finger
  • Usually 3rd, 4th, 5th finger
  • Difficulty gripping objects
Causes
  • Unknown, but the following are risk factors:
  • People of Scandinavian or Northern European ancestry
  • Men rather than women
  • Over the age of 40
  • Family history
  • Liver cirrhosis
Treatment
  • Seek medical advise
  • soft tissue mobilization
  • stretching of fingers and hand
  • bracing
