S/P Ankle Reconstruction

Definition:
Reconstruction of these ligaments involves tightening or replacing them where they have become lax or ruptured. There are a number of different operations that may be used to reconstruct the ligaments. The purpose of the reconstruction is to regain the stability the ankle has lost while keeping as much mobility as possible.

Symptoms
  • Ankle instability
  • Pain in the ankle
  • Ankle swelling
Causes
  • Chronic medial or lateral ankle sprain
  • Acute medial or lateral ankle sprain
  • Direct blow
  • Rapid shifting movement with your foot planted
Treatment
  • Period of immobilization
  • Massage to reduce swelling
  • Passive ROM, progress to active ROM
  • Non-weight bearing ankle and lower extremity strengthening
  • Progress to weight bearing ankle and lower extremity strengthening
  • Gait program
