S/P Cervical Fusion

Definition:
A surgical procedure that links together damaged segments of the vertebral column in the neck. The disc(s) between one or more vertebrae are removed, and bone growth is stimulated to link together adjacent vertebrae. Often, a metal device is used to stabilize the fusion until the bone growth is solid.

  • Pain in the neck
  • Loss of ROM in the neck
  • Radiating pain in upper extremity
  • Numbness in upper extremity
Causes
  • Degeneration of the cervical vertebra
  • Degeneration of the cervical disc
  • Neck trauma
Treatment
  • Period of immobilization in cervical collar
